Our Story

Chris Felts - Owner

Felts Supports for Living

Galax, VA office

Chris Felts has been working to help individuals with disabilities for over 30 years, and his connection to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities runs deep.  His step-sister, Whitney, has cerebral palsy, and even before Whitney was born, Chris's father introduced his family to a life serving others.  "When I was 14 years old, we had 3 gentlemen with disabilities living with us as part of our family.  So we bring a unique perspective to this service; we've lived it."

Chris has managed group homes for disabled adults, kids and the elderly.  Before that, he wrote programs for local Community Service Boards in Virginia, expanding mental and behavioral health services to the public.  In 2013, Chris and his dad, Jerry along with Jerry’s wife, Jean, started Felts Supports for Living in Galax, VA, to help people license their homes through the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services.  For Chris, going to work is like an extension of home.  "My sister works here, my son works here, my dad and step-mom are still involved in the company.  We are a family-run agency."

The Felts agency also offers training and support to home providers.  Whether individuals need a visit from a nurse or physical therapy, Felts Supports for Living provides those connections as well as creating connections within families that allow individuals to feel loved and valued.

Chris is always thrilled to match individuals with families and see them living their best lives.  And the Felts Sponsored Residential program is life-changing on both sides.  "Our folks have such a positive disposition, it makes you want to be around them.  When I see what they accomplish, it brings me joy.  They've done stuff I've never done!  They go on cruises, to Disneyland, run in 5Ks, one individual went to Alaska with his family...and the best part is they formulate friendships and become ingrained in their community."

According to Chris, the most important aspect of working with individuals with disabilities is trust.  "Building trust is essential because our folks have been through so much, they may have moved around a lot or been through a lot of different staff.  When you have that trust, they become more at ease and they feel like they belong.  And everybody deserves to feel like they belong."

Chris feels strongly about expanding Felts Supports for Living in order to provide more programs and opportunities for individuals to live what he calls "a life like ours," and he's dedicated to his mission.  "I feel empowered to help them succeed in whatever they want to do.  They deserve to live a life with respect and dignity that is happy, healthy and safe."

Alisha Shupe - Chief Operating Officer (COO)

Felts Supports for Living

Galax, VA office

Alisha Shupe was in nursing school when she realized working with people with disabilities was her calling. She worked at the Southwest Virginia Training Center for 5 years, then worked at the Catawba Hospital for 12 years as a Treatment Team Coordinator and led group therapy. She moved back to southwest Virginia to become a Sponsored Residential Supervisor in Mount Rogers. Shortly after, she started working at the Felts Supports for Living office in Galax. At that time, Felts only had 8 individuals.

“I saw how important this service is to keep individuals happy and integrated into the community. This job has been my passion.”

In 2022, Alisha became a provider, welcoming an individual with disabilities into her own home. “He had a complicated mental health background and we didn’t have anyone else through our office to support him, so my husband and I opened our home and I’m so glad we did.”

“I love this job because we get to match people with the right environment so they can thrive. I feel like I’m truly doing important work. I love supporting the families we serve, and I love being a provider.”

Chelsea Mathis - MSW, QIDP Director of NRV Felts Office

Director of Quality Assurance and Risk Management

Felts Supports for Living

Floyd, VA office

Chelsea Mathis started working in the mental health field when she was 18 years old.  With a masters degree in social work, her career path was influenced by her father’s work throughout her childhood with individuals diagnosed with traumatic brain injuries as well as developmental disabilities. When Chelsea was 7 years old, her dad welcomed Robert and Charlie into the family.  Robert and Charlie had developmental and physical disabilities, and quickly became part of the family.  “Our dinner table just got larger.  Life didn’t change too much, our family just got bigger.”

Robert and Charlie joined in all the family adventures:  camping, beach trips, and especially birthdays.  “Birthdays were always so fun because Robert LOVES blowing out candles.  My brothers and I always knew that Robert would make a beeline to blow out the candles on the cake.”

As the New River Valley Director of Felts Supports for Living, Chelsea is excited to expand the agency's services to other areas of Virginia.  She also offers training classes and support for both Sponsored Residential Providers and Direct Support Professionals from her Felts Supports for Living office in Floyd, VA.  She understands the profound impact of helping homeowners who want to open their homes (and their hearts) to people with disabilities, much like the home where she grew up.  When her dad retired, she says it was a natural transition to welcome Robert and Charlie into her own home to live with her husband and 3 kids.  "I couldn't imagine Robert and Charlie not being part of our lives.  Opening your home to others in need gives you a different perspective.  It's life-changing for them, but it also changes your life.  We have gained so much from them and they continue to teach us - and our kids - valuable life lessons.”

Charlie is now the official “welcoming committee” at Chelsea’s house in Floyd, VA, a job in which Chelsea says he takes great pride.  “Charlie's the greeter!  Whoever comes over always meets Charlie first.  He loves sitting on the porch and talking to everyone.”

Chelsea's goal is to help those with disabilities live a meaningful life, develop healthy routines, and feel a true connection with family and friends in their community.  “We all have gifts and have something to offer this world, and being able to foster that connection makes me really happy.  We all deserve to be valued and have a voice.”
